Henk Brand, PhD, is a medical biologist and Associate Professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, where he has worked in the Department of Oral Biochemistry since 1996. His research focuses on the relationship between systemic diseases and salivary composition, particularly salivary biomarkers in gastrointestinal and renal diseases and the oral health of cancer survivors. He has authored more than 250 PubMed-indexed publications. In parallel, he has extensively studied the portrayal of dentists in cinema and was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2024.
The lecture Portrayal of Dentists in Movies explores how dentistry and dental professionals have been represented on screen since the early twentieth century. Based on the systematic analysis of 259 films released between 1907 and 2018, it examines the dental procedures shown and the professional and social behaviour attributed to dentists. Selected film clips will illustrate recurring stereotypes and reveal whether the cinematic image of the dentist has changed over time.

Prelegerea Reprezentarea medicilor stomatologi în filme analizează modul în care profesia stomatologică a fost ilustrată în cinematografie de la începutul secolului al XX-lea. Pe baza evaluării sistematice a 259 de filme realizate între 1907 și 2018, vor fi discutate procedurile dentare prezentate și comportamentele profesionale și sociale atribuite medicilor stomatologi. Secvențe cinematografice reprezentative vor evidenția stereotipurile recurente și evoluția imaginii dentistului de-a lungul timpului.
